OUTBOARD EVOLUTION

Though Evinrude purchased Johnson during the Great Depression, Johnson technology retained separate engineering and design until the mid-1950s. In 1941, Johnson revolutionized their “T” series outboards and the outboard industry in general with a significantly more substantial leg and “wobbler” (neoprene rubber) water pump. In addition, the new fuel tank and cowl were made from high-tech sheet aluminum and incorporated into the redesign. This may have been due to wartime material shortages. Currently, BRP-Johnson and part of the monolithic Bombardier Group, Johnson outboards take into account then-unheard of things like four-stroke technology, emissions control and fuel economy, all of which are balanced by power and durability in a lightweight package. The new 25hp Johnson offers two-cylinder displacement in a high-performance, yet the engine is quiet and designed for harsh saltwater conditions. The evolution of the brand can be seen in the “Before & After” photos above by comparing the vintage photo in the 1941 Johnson Sea Horse advertisement (left) with the photo of a modern-day Johnson Outboard next to it.
