SURE LURES

Talk about an inauspicious start. One day in 1898, James Heddon, then a Michigan newspaper publisher, flung a whittled piece of wood into a pond while waiting for a fishing partner to arrive. Astonishingly, the bass struck the wood and fishing lures were never the same again. Heddon’s “Dowagiac Expert” lures appeared on the market in 1902. Since then, the materials have changed — from wood to modern resin — and production has become automated. But rest assured, the successful tradition has not been forgotten. For example, one of the best-selling Heddon Lures today is the Lucky 13 which features the same silence-blasting chug at a quick snap of the rod tip that it has had since 1920.
