Letters to the Editor

INDUSTRY REVIVAL

In my 25 years of show management, I have had the opportunity to attend, work and manage boat shows all across North America and Europe. When I attended Wave’s Marine SuperShow, I was immediately drawn to the arts, food, family activities and entertainment component that set the SuperShow apart from shows currently being produced throughout the country. While many shows have tried pieces of these activities as add-ons, no one has (until now) successfully implemented them as major ingredients of their show. My congratulations to the entire Wave team for creating such a great out-of-the-box show concept. The beauty of the concept is that it can be taken and tooled for almost any major market in the country.

    Expo Management/Boating Expositions, Inc.

Editor’s Response: Dale, I can’t tell you how honored I am by your comments regarding the Marine SuperShow. And what a letter! I have taken an excerpt to include here and will forward the rest of your letter to our writer, Kaya Baez, who is working on the post-event feature article entitled “Nautical Extravaganza!” The entire Wave Family looks forward to discussing your ideas on expanding the concept nationally.

WAVE SURPIRSE
My husband Ralph is a big Wave fan! We had a chance to meet you and your team at the Marine SuperShow. The kids had a great time! Please consider printing this image of him wearing a Wave t-shirt. Don’t tell him anything — I want it to be a surprise! He’s so proud of his 27lbs bull dolphin fish. You will make his day.

— Mrs. Collazo
    Wave Fan

Editor’s Response: Mrs. Collazo, if I remember correctly, your husband is the respected Dr. Ralph Collazo, a renowned dentist who owns a 340 Searay aptly named Open Wide. I also hear he’s an aspiring boater and fisherman on the weekends! It’s my pleasure to accommodate your unique request. Dr. Collazo, if you’re reading this, we love you!

WATER WORK

I just wanted to notify you and your readers that the FWC recently unveiled its $17.5-million partnership investment — the Florida Bass Conservation Center. It’s a state-of-the-art hatchery and research center that will help Florida keep its undisputable distinction of being the “Fishing Capital of the World.” The center, near Brooksville, includes a 39,000-square-foot main building with 63 exterior ponds and public fishing opportunities for visitors. Through the center, Florida will invite leading researchers to experiment on bass production and stocking techniques and share their secrets with the rest of the world, uncovering more secrets in the process. I included a photo I took of Florida Governor Charlie Crist and Monroe County Mayor Mario Di Gennaro with Crist’s bull dolphin catch off Marathon in the Florida Keys.

— Rodney Barreto
    Chairman
Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission

Editor’s Response: Rodney, I’m a huge fan of the FWC. I applaud you for all the great things you’re doing to advance your purpose — and benefit not just Florida but the entire world. Please keep me updated on your initiatives so I may convey them to our readers as developments are made and milestones reached. Great work!

AWESOME ARTIST

My name is John B. Gynell and I’m a Bahamian artist. I pick up your magazine every month. You have some very interesting articles, expanding well beyond the other boating articles you see in similar publications in the industry. I would love for you to take a look at my photography and get a sense of my work. I shoot large format B&W landscapes & seascapes of the Bahamian Islands, kind of like a Clyde Butcher or Ansel Adams. I feel my work would be greatly appreciated by your audience, as your subscribers are typically my fans — the yachting/boating type. Check out my website at Korateo.com and let me know what you think.

Editor’s Response: John, your work is impressive. I’ll be in touch with you for an upcoming round-up I’m working on featuring nautical creative minds. You fit the profile I’m looking for. Thanks for your loyal readership and I hope our readers buy some of your photographs — I know I can see one of your photos framed in my condo. I’ll be scheduling a tour of your showroom soon.

FRIENDLY FAN
I wanted to congratulate you on a job well done with Wave and WaveLife.com. I went through the whole thing and loved it. When I went to see who the editor was, I was happily surprised it was your work. I remember you from your days at LRM, Las Olas Magazine, International Yachtsman and Modernista design magazine. You did some great work with those titles as well, although Wave is blowing all of them out of the water! I live on Brickell not too far from Wave’s headquarters, if you ever want to grab lunch. Attached is a shot of me on my last vacation to the Caribbean.

— Tony Serrano
    Realtor-Associate

Editor’s Response: Tony, you don’t know how much it means to me that you’ve tracked my career throughout all these years! Not only will I have lunch with you, I’d love to invite you out on our Wave Boat on whatever weekend you’d like. There’s a lot of fun to be had on the sandbars that grace our South Florida waters. I’ll be in touch soon.

BIG CATCH
I read through your latest issue of Wave and wanted to congratulate you on a job well done. It’s incredible how much you manage to incorporate on the nautical lifestyle that is so appealing to the world and full-time water enthusiasts like myself. Attached is a photo of me with a monster kingfish I caught in 100 feet of water this past February off of Tavernier Key. My dad and I were high-speed trolling for wahoo when it ate our bait — we’d never caught a kingfish trolling 18 knots!

Editor’s Response: Impressive! Thanks for sharing this world-record worthy story. I’m sure our readers will work hard to keep up with you…it’s not everyday that one can brag about an experience like that!
