Inspirational Wave
A few weeks ago, I was looking out over the bay from my condo at the Flamingo on South Beach when I was inspired to take the day off and make the short trek over to the beach. I’m glad I did because I got more done sprawled on the sand than I would have from the confines of the office. Before I had time to smooth the wrinkles off my towel, I caught sight of an older couple lugging around metal detectors. A treasure-hunting feature was already in the works in my head. After talking to them for about half an hour, I learned that it’s quite feasible to make a little extra cash - and even an honest living - combing the surf for jewelry, money and anything else people drop as they frolic in the waves. That day I was even inspired - after a couple of Heinekens - to scribble up a quick letter made of neon post-its and throw it out into the tide in a Coke bottle, hoping some exotic beauty would intercept it and call me on my cell, which I made sure to include next to my signature. Hence, another feature, “Message in a Bottle,” was born. As if that wasn’t enough inspiration for one day, the stay-at-home-except-when-she-wants-to-go-to-the-beach mom sitting next to me jotted down a laundry list of her favorite cookbooks and told me to stop by for dinner sometime, after listening to my exaggerated phone call complaining of stomach pangs and midday starvation. Lo and behold, our feature on seafood recipes was conceived. A few days later, I met our “Siren,” Miss Florida 2004 at a photo shoot and knew instantly that she would make a perfect addition to our pages. The rest of the articles in this issue came about in similar ways. Sometimes all you have to do is take a break from the daily grind to let a little creativity seep in. Shoot me an email at jarauz@wavelife.com if you have a great idea you’d like to share for an upcoming issue. Your experiences just might make it onto our pages. Until then, make sure to slap on some sunscreen.
